Sahar Hathout disappeared amidst a wave of arrests in Egypt

Sahar Hathout was abducted at her house in Cairo on November 1, 2018. On April 3, 2019, in response to a communication sent by the UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances, the Egyptian authorities denied any record of arrest in relation to Hathout. It is understood that Hathout is now released.

On November 1, 2018, at around 2 a.m., state security forces broke into and raided Hathout’s house in Cairo. The officers arrested her and took her to an unknown location. Hathout’s arrest took place amidst a wave of arrests occurring in late October 2018.

On November 9, 2019 the UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances sent a communication to the Egyptians’ authorities requesting that they clarify Hathout’s fate and whereabouts. The Egyptian authorities responded in March 2019, stating that they had no record of arrest for Hathout. It is understood that Hathout is now released.
