EuroMed Rights, Human Rights Watch and MENA Rights Group have addressed a letter to Pope XIV ahead of his historic visit to Algeria, scheduled from 13 to 15 April 2026. In the letter, the organisations urge him to raise, both in private with the Algerian authorities and in his public communications, a number of pressing human rights concerns documented in the country. These relate, in particular, to violations of the right to freedom of religion or belief affecting religious minorities, the ongoing crackdown on civic space, and the serious violations perpetrated against refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants.

On March 7, 2025, MENA Rights Group co-hosted a side event during the 58th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council. The event focused on the shrinking civic space in Algeria since the visit in the country of the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders, Mary Lawlor, in 2023. The discussion coincided with the presentation of the Special Rapporteur’s country visit report.

MENA Rights Group joins regional and international civil society in urging UN Member States to address the ongoing repression of civic space in Algeria during the upcoming 58th session of the UN Human Rights Council.

Algerian authorities have increasingly used arbitrary travel bans to retaliate against perceived critics, Human Rights Watch and MENA Rights Group said. The authorities should lift the arbitrary bans and stop using them as a tool to repress dissent.
