On July 28 2015, LaithAnzi was on his way to his religious school, in Baghdad, to sit for an exam. At 11 am, while he was talking with his parents over the phone, Anzi informed them that he was at a checkpoint controlled by the Federal Police at Al Saydiya. He was then notified that he needed a sponsor in order to go through and enter Baghdad. He was on the phone with his parents for one hour until the phone line was cut off afterwards. Since then, there has been no information regarding his fate and whereabouts.
On August 1, 2015, Anzi’s family submitted a complaint regarding his abduction at the Al Saydiya Police Station, but to no avail. In 2015, 2016, 2017, and in September of 2019, his family looked for his name in the lists of detainees in Baghdad and Muthana Airports prisons as well as at the Central Criminal Court of Iraq, but to no avail.
On October6, 2020,MENA Rights Group and the Iraqi War Crimes Documentation Center requested the Urgent Intervention of the UN Committee on Enforced Disappearances.
